The King of Staten Island

2020 ‧ Comedy/Drama ‧ 2h 16m ‧ 14A

Director: Judd Apatow

Writers: Judd Apatow, Pete Davidson, and Dave Sirus

A semi-autobiographical film about Pete Davidson growing up in Staten Island, including losing his father during 9/11 and entering the world of stand up comedy.  He spends his days smoking weed and dreaming of being a tattoo artist until events force him to grapple with his grief and take his first steps forward in life.

Pete Davidson was diagnosed with BPD in 2017 when he was 23 and has been a huge advocate for raising awareness of the stigma of BPD.  He has struggled with suicidal ideation over the years and participates in DBT to manage his illness.  He also has found humour as a way of coping and is a stand up comedian.

Suicide is no laughing matter.  Our aim is to highlight the seriousness of suicide amongst people living with BPD and honour anyone touched by it.  This topic often holds a lot of grief and heaviness and our intention is to raise awareness by bringing the community together to learn more about preventing suicide and life promotion through connection, comedy, and care.
